2018 Ford Escape vs Subaru Forester

Driving around the Geneva, Canandaigua, Auburn, and Rochester areas should be an enjoyable experience. You deserve the best, so you need a ride that can facilitate that. For an impressive mix of extra cargo space and responsive handling, you need a crossover. While these versatile vehicles are incredible, finding the right one for your needs can be tricky.

To make navigating such a competitive market a bit easier on you, we've taken two of the top crossovers and put them against each other. The 2018 Ford Escape and the 2018 Subaru Forester both have plenty to offer, but which one is right for you? Find out in our detailed Ford Escape vs Subaru Forester comparison.

Ford vs Subaru: Performance

Before you can commit to any kind of vehicle, you need to be sure it can get you where you need to go. Both crossovers have respectable engines, but the 2018 Escape offers a bit more bang for your buck. Comparing mid-level engines, the Escape's 1.5L 4-cylinder EcoBoost® turbo offers an impressive 179 horsepower. Meanwhile, the Forester's 2.5L 4-cylinder can only muster 170 horsepower.

If you go the highest trim level, the 2018 Escape vastly outperforms the 2018 Forester in terms of torque. The Forester's 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo does offer 258 lb-ft of torque, but the Ford Escape and its 2.0L EcoBoost® engine takes it even further with its incredible torque output of 275 lb-ft. That kind of power contributes greatly to another one of its great features.

Escape vs Forester: Capability

When you think of towing trailers, crossovers probably aren't the first that come to mind, but most actually have a pretty respectable towing capacity. With the Ford Escape's enhanced torque, however, it has a top-of-the-line towing capacity. You can tow up to 3,500 pounds behind the Escape. The Subaru Forester with all its extra power can only haul 1,500 pounds at most, less than half of what the Escape can do.

In terms of technological capabilities, Subaru has always been fairly advanced. Even with all the tech upgrades in the Forester, however, the Escape's SYNC® 3 infotainment system remains to be one of the best infotainment systems on the market. Its intuitive interface is much easier to use and operate than the Forester's, and it includes Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ connectivity features.

Safety Ratings

While both crossovers are loaded with driver assistance features meant to prevent collisions from happening, those unfortunate events can sometimes occur. After crash tests, the 2018 Escape actually performed better, earning a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). As for the 2018 Forester, it earned only four stars for the Overall Front Safety Rating from the NHTSA, while the 2018 Escape earned five stars in that category. This is due to the Ford Escape's suite of advanced safety features, including:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control, for maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you.
  • Lane-Keeping System, for alerting you of unintentional lane departure.
  • Personal Safety System™, for an all-encompassing cocoon of advanced airbags.
