Ford F-150 versus Ram 1500

This year, the new 2018 Ford F-150 offers up a pretty broad range of upgrades and tweaks to each of its trim levels. The biggest change is the addition of the new standard 3.3L V6 engine. Other engines in the lineup also get an updated 10-speed automatic transmission, delivering more power than before. The Ford F-150 offers up a number of improved safety features, including automatic start-stop functionality, as well Front Collision Warning and Avoidance, and updated styling and profile outside.

Meanwhile, the 2018 Ram doesn't quite offer up as much, and what it does bring is more deletions than additions. It loses the Outdoorsman trim, with some (but not all) features shuffled to other trim levels. It also makes the only transmission option an 8-speed, eliminating the prior base 6-speed option.

Ford F-150 Engines and Efficiency

This year, the 2018 Ford F-150 comes standard with a 3.3L V6 engine, which delivers 290 horsepower as well as 265 lb-ft of torque, matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It also gets an EPA-estimated 20 city/25 highway MPG.

There are a whopping four other engine options available: a 2.7L turbocharged V6 engine that produces 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, a 5.0L V8 that's rated at 395 horses and 400 lb-ft of torque, a 3.5L turbocharged V6 that puts out 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, and a turbocharged 3.5L V6 with 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft. All these other options are paired with an automatic 10-speed transmission.

Ram 1500 Engine Options

The 201 Ram 1500 offers a more powerful base engine but nowhere near the range of choices you get from the F-150. This base 3.6L V6 engine cranks out 305 horsepower, as well as 269 lb-ft of torque. There are two other engine choices: a 5.7L V8 that delivers about 395 horsepower, equivalent to that of the F-150, and a turbocharged 3.0L EcoDiesel V6, which gets 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque Neither of these, however, match the power that is delivered by the turbocharged V6 options in the F-150, nor can the 8-speed transmission measure up to the Ford's 10-speed.
