Heavy duty trucks are a great choice when you need to move cargo or equipment around Geneva, Canandaigua, and Rochester. Trucks like the Ford F-350 and Chevrolet 3500HD offer dependable performance. But which one is more capable?

Friendly Ford looks at what each one can offer you during your next job or project with this 2018 Ford F-350 vs Chevrolet 3500HD project.

Ford F-350 vs Chevrolet 3500HD Power

To be able to do all your biggest jobs the 2018 Ford F-350 is loaded with power. It has two available engines that are both capable of carrying whatever you need.

The first choice is a 6.2L 2-Valve Gas V8 engine that gets up to 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. This works with a TorqShift 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with Tow/Haul mode to help you change gears even while pulling your biggest cargo.

The second engine works with the same transmission but is larger and gives you more power. It's a 6.7L Power Stroke® V8 Turbo Diesel engine that can get up to 450 horsepower and an impressive 935 lb-ft of torque.

The 2018 Chevrolet 3500HD also gives you two options, one gas, one diesel, but they aren't as powerful. The smaller of the two is a 6.0L V8 engine that gets 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. The larger one is a 6.6L V8 engine up to 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque.

They both work with a 6-speed automatic transmission, but it doesn't have the smart shifting of the Ford's TorqShift.

Ford F-350 vs Chevrolet 3500HD Towing Capacity

With the kind of power offered in it's two engines, the 2018 Ford F-350 can carry a lot of cargo or equipment for you.

For conventional towing it has a maximum towing capacity of up to 21,000 pounds. It's also capable of being equipped for 5th-Wheel/Gooseneck towing. When it has this added feature, it has a towing capacity of up to 32,000 pounds.

No matter what you're hauling you'll be able to keep it under control with Trailer Sway Control. This monitors what you're towing and applies braking when necessary to keep everything level and stable.

The 2018 Chevy 3500HD is also very capable but it can't tow as much. For conventional towing it can carry up to 20,000 pounds. It's also capable of 5th-Wheel/Gooseneck towing, but it doesn't increase its ability as much as the Ford F-350. With this added on, it's maximum towing capacity is 23,300 pounds.

Ford F-350 vs Chevrolet 3500HD Payload

The truck bed of the 2018 Ford F-350 is made from a high-strength military-grade aluminum-alloy. This allows it to be durable no matter what you're throwing in the back.

It's also lightweight so all that power under the hood gets used for your cargo instead of focusing on the truck body. This helps it carry a maximum payload of up to 7,630 pounds.

The 2018 Chevy 3500HD doesn't have the same lightweight design as the bed and body of the Ford F-350. It also doesn't have as much power so its limited in its ability to carry a lot of weight. At almost 500 pounds less, it's maximum payload capacity is 7,153 pounds.
