The midsize car segment is highly competitive and has a range of capable, well-equipped vehicles. Two of the best examples in this class, the 2018 Ford Fusion and the Hyundai Sonata, come with sharp handling, upscale styling, and cutting-edge technology. However, there are some differences that may make one a better choice for your driving needs.

Drivers in Geneva, Canandaigua, and Rochester can find out the key differences between these two midsize cars with our 2018 Ford Fusion vs. Hyundai Sonata comparison.

The Ford Fusion is available with several engine options. The base model has a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, which puts out 173 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. However, there's also a few available engine options:

  • The 1.5L EcoBoost® engine with Auto Start-Stop technology generates 181 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque.
  • The 2.0L EcoBoost® engine produces 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque.
  • The 2.7L EcoBoost® V6 engine bumps the power up to 325 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque.

These engines shuttle power to the front wheels or all four wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Hybrid engines, though, use an Electronic Continuously Variable transmission.

The Hyundai Sonata comes equipped with a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine, which produces 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Like the Ford Fusion, the Hyundai Sonata's engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, except for its Eco model.

Although the Hyundai Sonata generates more standard power, it can't top the 2.7L V6 of the Ford Focus. Its maximum power comes from its Turbo 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, which maxes out at 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

The Ford Fusion has a lean, well-proportioned body that hints at its sportiness. There are a few stylish upgrades to the headlights, taillights, and the grille, as well as a low, oval shape to the front end for improved aerodynamics. Within the cabin, it uses a minimal design with metallic touches for a practical, upscale look. Plus, you can customize the interior with its available packages, such as the SE Appearance Package. This bundle comes with black cloth and vinyl bolster seats for a dash of luxury, as well as halogen fog lamps and 18-inch premium dark stainless wheels.

The Hyundai Sonata is highly stylized and distinctive, with the signature hexagonal grille and a hatchback profile. The proportions are shapely and smooth as well, with a long roof and soft edges. Inside, the Hyundai Sonata has a cohesive design with earth tones and subtle metallic accents. However, it doesn't come with an appearance-oriented package, so customizing the 2018 Sonata to your personal taste may be more of a challenge.

Inside the Ford Fusion, you'll find a vast array of safety features to help you stay aware of your surroundings. Some include:

  • Rear View Camera: This standard camera will show you what's behind the Fusion as you're reversing out of a parking spot.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go: This safety system uses a radar to sense the flow of traffic, so it'll adjust the speed of the Fusion to maintain a set following distance from the car ahead of you.
  • Enhanced Active Park Assist: Using ultrasonic sensors, this feature will scan a parking spot and smoothly park the Fusion for you. All you need to do is shift, accelerate, and brake-this system will do the rest.

As for the Hyundai Sonata, it also comes equipped with many safety systems, such as Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. While comparable features are offered in the Ford Fusion, the Hyundai Sonata only uses rear parking sensors to help you with parking maneuvers. Plus, its available cruise control system is optional on a few select trims, while Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go is an available feature on most Fusion trims.
